Obiettivi

Aims

Understanding sedimentary processes and the nature of the stratigraphical record. Unraveling stratigraphic successions to unveil their sedimentological, paleogeographic and paleotectonic significance.

Contents

The stratigraphic approach to geology and the depth of time. Cyclical and discontinuous nature of the stratigraphical record. Physical, seismic and sequence stratigraphy of terrigenous and carbonate systems. Geology of Italy with specific focus on the Permo-Mesozoic succession of the Southalpine belt. Opening and closure of the Alpine Tethys. Reading sedimentary successions in the field.

Detailed program

First part (Advanced stratigraphy): Nature of the Stratigraphical record. Unconformities, discontinuities and ciclicity. Comprehensive and condensed sedimentation. The astronomical record. Physical, seismic, dynamic and sequence stratigraphy. Basin analysis. Stratigraphic and geodynamic evolution of the Southern Alps. Field work: Daily excursions on the following themes: Early Permian tectono-magmatic event; Mid-Triassic tectono-magmatic cycle; Rifting and spreading of Alpine Tethys.

Prerequisites

Firm knowledge of the fundaments of paleontology, sedimentary geology and general geology.

Teaching form

Lessons and field excursions on the Stratigraphy of the Southern Alps (in English language).
