Course summary SYLLABUS

In this course, in addition to introducing the theoretical basis of Raman spectroscopy, some of the main applications in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences will be shown. We will also range from applications in Cultural Heritage and Health and Environmental Studies. The course will benefit from the contribution of nine Teachers who will bring their experience and show how this technique can lead to fertile scientific collaborations.

Part of the course will cover purely geological topics, with a focus on new applications of Raman spectroscopy in U-Pb Geochronology and in studies of sediment provenance in different continental and marine depositional environments. An important part of the course will deal with the issues of air-water-land pollution by man with the introduction of fabric and plastic fibers into the planet's natural systems and how to quantify and recognize these pollutants.

This course is created to show how Raman Spectroscopy can be useful in very different disciplines of science. This tool creates a network of connections between the different disciplinary sectors, encouraging collaboration and triggering original discoveries in line with the main research themes in which our university is involved. Sharing the discoveries in which everyone works suggests new ideas with a multidisciplinary approach.

The course will take place in person only and will include 14 hours of lectures and two hours of experiments and measurements carried out in the laboratory, using the instruments of the DISAT Provenance Centre.
