Social Signals and Synchronization: Insights from Human-Robot and Human-Human Interaction
This talk examines how humans engage in social interactions, attribute humanness, and achieve synchronization across diverse contexts, from interactions with humanoid robots to other humans. Regarding human-robot interaction (HRI), studies reveal that eye contact boosts social attunement and enhances the perception of humanoid agents, like the iCub robot, as more anthropomorphic and engaging; behavioral, neural, and subjective data indicate that communicative gaze acts as a powerful social signal, facilitating joint attention and potentially supporting the adoption of Intentional Stance. Extending beyond HRI to human-human coordination, we find that mutual adaptation emerges as critical for achieving synchrony and attributing humanness: greater adaptation signals a human partner. Finally, the talk explores coordination dynamics, focusing on synchronization both as a goal-driven and an emergent phenomenon, and detailing the relationship between real-time coordination dynamics and social network properties.
