Reflecting on the ICMESA Accident: Safety Lessons for the Chemical Industry

On July 10, 2026, we mark the 50th anniversary of the A101 chemical reactor accident at ICMESA, which released a cloud of dioxin over Seveso and nearby towns, causing one of the worst environmental disasters in history.

This conference explores how the ICMESA accident changed safety practices in the chemical industry and influenced prevention, protection, and process mitigation strategies. It is organized by the Lombard Section of the Italian Chemical Society, the Lombardy Cluster for Green Chemistry – LGCA, the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Technologies “Giulio Natta” – SCITEC of CNR, and FAST – Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations.
