Course Syllabus
Aims
1. Understanding the basis and the clinical behaviour of syndromes associated with renal diseases
2. Understanding the mechanisms, the causes and the clinical presentation of acute and chronic kidney injury
3. Understanding the indications and methods of kidney biopsy in the evaluation of renal diseases
4. Understanding the basis and the possible complications of renal replacement therapies
5. Understanding the basis and the possible complications of renal transplantation
Contents
The clerkships will cover the most important aspects related to the commonly encountered conditions affecting the kidney. Students will acquire the basic knowledge to recognize the typical renal syndromes, advanced renal failure signs/symptoms and electrolytes and fluid disturbances. At the conclusion of the courses, the students will be able to generate an appropriate differential diagnosis of the principal kidney diseases, to illustrate the main indications for kidney biopsy, renal replacement therapy and renal transplantation and to explain the possible complications of these procedures.

1. Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with nephrotic syndrome
2. Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with isolated urinary abnormalities
3. Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with rapidly progressive renal failure
4. Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with chronic kidney disease
5. Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with electrolytes and fluid disturbances
6. Differential diagnosis of the principal primary and secondary renal diseases
7. Indications, technical aspects and possible complications of renal biopsy
8. Indications, technical aspects and possible complications of dialysis
9. Indications, technical aspects and possible complications of renal transplantation
Teaching form
Practical guided observation activities with briefings and debriefings by hospital tutors.
Presentation and discussion of clinical cases.
Interaction with patients will be in Italian language.
Interaction with tutors will be both in Italian and English language.
