Aims

· Understanding the basis, the aetiology and clinical behavior of obstructive and restrictive lung diseases

· Understanding the basis, the aetiology and clinical behaviour of pneumonia and its complications

· Understanding the basis, the aetiology and clinical behavior of lung and pleural cancer and the relative complication

· Understanding the basis, the aetiology and the clinical behavior of acute and chronic respiratory failure

· Understanding indications and methods for oxygen therapy

· Interpretation of principal pulmonary function tests, blood gas analysis and chest radiography


Contents

The clerkships will cover the most important aspects related to the commonly Respiratory diseases. Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to take history and recognize acute and chronic respiratory failure signs, obstructive and restrictive diseases signs and symptoms. Students will take part to both outpatient and inpatient clinical activity, including pulmonary function tests practice.

Detailed program

· Take a history, perform a physical examination on patients with pulmonary problems including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension and respiratory failure

· Thake history, perform physical examination and understand the clinical behavior of patients with allergic respiratory diseases

· Take history, perform a physical examination up on patients with pleural diseases and a variety of infectious processes with pleuropulmonary affection

· Interpret pulmonary function tests including spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide, exhaled nitric oxide detection

· Clinical distinction between Obstructive and Restrictive lung diseases

· Interpret arterial blood gases analysis

· Interpret the results of pleural fluid analysis

· Interpret plain radiographs of the chest and the relevant findings

· Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with acute or chronic respiratory failure

· Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with pneumonia

· Clinical approach and management of patient presenting with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease, Asthma and Interstitial lung diseases.

· Understanding the indications for pleural drainage and bronchial endoscopy procedures
