Aims

The course will provide the essential and up-to-date theoretical knowledge of the clinical diagnosis and management of the most common urological diseases. The course will focus on the use of laboratory tests, imaging methods and invasive procedures for the diagnosis of urological pathologies. Moreover, signs and symptoms, clinical management and therapeutic options of urological diseases will be described, addressing the learning needs of medical students. 

Contents

The lessons will cover the most important urological syndromes: bladder outlet obstruction, benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary tract infections, urinary stones, erectile disfunction. Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to diagnose and manage the main uro-oncological pathologies: prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers.

Detailed program

- Physical examination in urology

- Diagnostic tools in urology: laboratory tests, imaging tools, invasive procedures. 

- Anatomy of the kidney, of the bladder, of the upper urinary tract and of the prostate.

- Physiology and physiopathology of the bladder emptying: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS); other causes of bladder dysfunction (bladder neck sclerosis and urethral strictures)

- Prostate cancer

- Kidney cancer (benign and malignant)

- Upper tract urothelial cancer

- Bladder cancer

- Testicular cancer

- Kidney and ureteral stones

- Urinary tract infection. orchitis, acute prostatitis

- Congenital disorders: pyeloureteral junction obstruction, vesicle-ureteral reflux, horseshoe kidney, hypospadia

- Emergency: kidney, ureteral and bladder trauma, urethral and testicular trauma

- Emergency: testicular torsion, acute urinary retention, obstructive anuria.

- Andrology: erectile disfunction, induratio penis plastica and recurvatum of the penis, varicocele, hydrocele.


Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of fundamentals of biology, genetics, morphology, histology, physiology of the uro-genital system.

Assessment method

(1) Written exam with multiple choice quiz comprising 30 questions with only one correct answer, aimed at evaluating global comprehension of course program. Each correct answer is scored 1. A minimum score of 18 is required for being admitted to oral examination

(2) Oral examination (discussion on topics covered during the lectures or clinical case analysis)
