Course Syllabus
Aims
The course aim to consolidate the knowledge of normal, topographic and surgical anatomy of the endocrine system and urinary tract, focusing on the correlations between anatomy and surgical and clinical practice.
Contents
The lessons will cover the most important fields of the endocrine and urological anatomy Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to understand the anatomy of the endocrine and urinary system and their relationships with surgery and clinical practice.
Detailed program
- Anatomy of the pelvis: bones and muscles, vascular supplies of the pelvis, lymphatic drainage of the pelvis.
- Normal and topographic anatomy of the badder and the prostate. Blood supply, innervation, lymphatic drainage.
- Zonal anatomy of the prostate.
- Anatomy of the urethra: 1) Posterior urethra, urethral sphincters. Functional mechanisms regulating micturition, urinary continence and ejaculation. 2) Anterior urethra. Brief description of the causes, diagnostic methods and treatment of the urethral strictures
- Anatomy of the penis. Relationships between anatomy of the penis and physiology of the erection, Peyronie's disease and penile fractures.
- Anatomy of the scrotum.
- Anatomy of the testis and epididymis. Vascular supply, vascular drainage, lymphatic drainage. Anatomical bases of varicocele.
- Anatomy of the spermatic cord. The vas deferens.
- Microstructure of the testis;
- Spermatogenesis: spermatids and spermatozoa
- Anatomy of the hypophysis. Hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis.
- Normal and topographic anatomy of the kidney, renal pelvis and calyces, ureters. Vascular supply and venous drainage.
- Urinary tract abnormalities.
- Normal and topographic anatomy of the adrenal glans. Blood supply and venous drainage. Microstructure of the adrenal glans.
- Lymph node dissection templates for prostate cancer, bladder cancer, testis cancer, penile cancer, upper urinary tract cancer.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of fundamentals of biology, genetics, morphology, histology, physiology of the uro-genital system.

Assessment method
1) Written exam with multiple choice quiz comprising 30 questions with only one correct answer, aimed at evaluating global comprehension of course program. Each correct answer is scored 1. A minimum score of 18 is required for being admitted to oral examination
