Obiettivi formativi
Contenuti sintetici

The course aims to address this topic with attention to the transformations that have taken place in the cities and metropolises and to the policies implemented to manage the change. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the socio-spatial processes underlying the formation of urban systems, to the role played by mobility and flows (of people and goods) in the definition of the new urban and metropolitan morphology and to the consequent policies implemented at local and metropolitan government level
Contents
The
consequences of globalization has been combined with local development processes
and changes in the socio-demographic structure and lifestyles of populations in
defining the new form of contemporary cities and metropolises. As a result of
the joint processes of de-urbanisation and re-urbanisation, nowadays cities require
new policies capable of understanding their causes and managing their
socio-spatial consequences.
Detailed program
The first part of the Course focuses on the analysis of socio-spatial processes underlying the transformation of the contemporary city and metropolis form. More in detail, attention is paid to the causes and consequences of the processes of de-urbanisation and re-urbanisation with reference both to the most important theoretical contributions and to the results of international, national and local research carried out on the subject.
The second part of the Course addresses the issue of policies implemented at urban and metropolitan level to govern the new urban morphology. The theme of policies is addressed both with attention to the contents, methods and planning tools and with reference to the new issues put forward by the contemporary debate on sustainable urban development.
The Course deals with the aforementioned topics paying particular attention to methods and data for the analysis of urban and metropolitan socio-spatial processes, making use, for this purpose, of a Laboratory specifically aimed at transferring skills in the field of secondary data analysis, quantitative socio-spatial analysis, knowledge and use of data sources and data-archives.Prerequisites
No prerequisites required.
Teaching methods
In the Covid-19 emergency period, lectures will take place remotely asynchronously with some physical presence events.
Assessment methods
Students who do not attend the Course, are expected to take a written examination.(also valid in the Covid-19 emergency period)
Students attending the Course are expected to draft a report on a research topic, addressed in small groups (and with the support of the teacher of the Laboratory) related to the topics covered during the Course. Particular attention is paid to the socio-spatial processes underlying the transformation of the morphology of Milan and its metropolitan area and its policies.
