Syllabus del corso
Obiettivi formativi
The course aims at providing
students with basic knowledge and critical analysis on the concept of state
territory and protection of cultural heritage in international law.
Contenuti sintetici
The first part of the course
will elaborate on the different regimes applicable to different spaces, such as
state territory, marine coastal zones and areas beyond national jurisdiction.
The second part of the course will focus on the international regime of
cultural properties with special emphasis on the so-called cultural treaties
concluded within the framework of UNESCO.

First part
1. Introduction to international law: subjects and sources.
2. The land territory of a state: acquisition, loss, boundaries
3. The maritime territory of a state: coastal zones and maritime delimitation
4. Areas beyond national jurisdiction
Second part
The protection of cultural heritage under the relevant treaties concluded within the framework of UNESCO, in particular as regards:
– cultural properties in time of war
– tangible cultural heritage
– intangible cultural heritage
– underwater cultural heritage
– restitution of removed cultural properties
– cultural diversity
Prerequisiti
Knowledge of the English
language
Metodi didattici
Class lectures in person, if
sanitary regulations allow. A tutor to provide additional seminars and
assistance for students who have no legal background has been requested.
