Antropologia medica

Il corso di Antropologia Medica si propone di mettere in luce le dimensioni sociali, culturali, politiche ed economiche del corpo, della salute, della malattia e dei sistemi di cura, con particolare riferimento agli assetti geopolitici e alle diseguaglianze socioeconomiche che esercitano il loro impatto sulla salute delle diverse popolazioni del pianeta. Tali questioni verranno esaminate lungo percorsi teorici ed etnografici declinati in quattro cicli tematici: 1) introduzione all’antropologia medica (concetti, paradigmi e testi fondamentali); 2) sofferenza sociale, violenza politica e diseguaglianze di salute nella prospettiva del Global Health; 3) salute mentale ed etnopsichiatria; 4) i contributi dell’antropologia medica nella comprensione delle trasformazioni demografiche e dell’invecchiamento globale. I primi due cicli afferiscono a un tronco comune nel quale verranno affrontati gli argomenti fondamentali. Il terzo e il quarto ciclo di lezioni, invece, rientrano in un tronco opzionale che tratta questioni specifiche interne alla disciplina. Al termine di ciascuno ciclo del tronco opzionale, gli studenti saranno invitati a presentare a tutta la classe un lavoro di gruppo in cui verranno esposti i tratti salienti di ciascuno dei temi affrontati in ogni singola lezione. L’organizzazione dei gruppi, la distribuzione dei temi e le date di presentazione verranno concordate durante la prima lezione. L’esercitazione rientrerà nella valutazione finale che verrà calcolata dalla media del voto ottenuto dal gruppo (espresso in trentesimi) e il voto ottenuto dal singolo studente durante l’esame.


L’insegnamento di antropologia medica ha l’obiettivo di fornire alle studentesse e agli studenti conoscenze approfondite e competenze di analisi critica sui principali temi d’interesse scientifico della disciplina, integrandoli in una prospettiva storica e inserendoli nel dibattito teorico e metodologico contemporaneo. Al termine del corso ci si attende pertanto l’acquisizione delle seguenti competenze: 

- comprensione degli aspetti metodologici e applicativi dell’approccio antropologico ai temi della salute, della malattia e della cura;

- competenze critiche rispetto alle differenti prospettive teoriche che hanno esplorato le implicazioni culturali, sociologiche e politiche del corpo e della malattia;

- conoscenza dei diversi settori e ambiti applicativi della disciplina, sia sul piano della ricerca sia sul piano dell’intervento terapeutico e di politica pubblica;

- sviluppo di capacità critiche e di orientamento autonomo tra i temi e gli argomenti affrontati, esplorando anche la possibilità di formulare in modo personale interessi di ricerca inediti e originali. 


Lezioni frontali; incontri seminariali; visione, analisi e discussione di materiali multimediali e documentari; sessioni di apprendimento cooperativo; dispense di approfondimento.


Durante lo svolgimento del corso saranno progressivamente caricati sulla piattaforma e-learning i riferimenti bibliografici e i materiali didattici integrativi per permettere alle studentesse e agli studenti di svolgere l’attività di gruppo e approfondire ulteriormente eventuali tematiche di interesse personale. Inoltre, ciò consentirà ai non frequentanti di seguire regolarmente l’andamento delle lezioni e di reperire concetti e materiali utili alla preparazione autonoma dell’esame. 


Il programma e la bibliografia d’esame prevedono lo studio dei contenuti delle lezioni del corso e dei testi qui di seguito indicati.

Prova orale sui contenuti del corso e dei testi in programma. L’interrogazione orale per l’attestazione delle conoscenze acquisite si strutturerà intorno a quattro domande volte ad esplorare: 1) i contenuti del primo libro a scelta (primo cicli di lezioni), 2) i contenuti del secondo libro a scelta (secondo ciclo di lezioni), 3) i contenuti del terzo libro a scelta (da scegliere, a discrezione dello studente, tra i testi indicati per il terzo o il quarto ciclo di lezioni), 4) infine, una domanda generale sulle lezioni e/o sulle slide del corso servirà ad attestare la capacità di creare connessioni e di analizzare in modo critico gli argomenti trattati a lezione. Nella valutazione finale rientrerà anche il voto ottenuto dal gruppo durante l’esposizione in classe. Il voto finale sarà ottenuto dalla media tra il voto dell’esercitazione di gruppo (espresso in trentesimi) e il voto ottenuto dal singolo studente durante l’esame. Per i non frequentanti, il lavoro di gruppo dovrà essere sostituito dalla lettura critica e autonoma di un altro testo tra quelli proposti in bibliografia. I contenuti principali e i nodi salienti dell'opera in questione verranno discussi in sede di esame, prestando particolare attenzione alle riflessioni personali.

Medical Anthropology

The course of Medical Anthropology aims to highlight the social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of the body, health, disease and systems of care, with particular reference to the geopolitical assets and socio-economic inequalities that have a strong impact on health conditions of different worlds populations. These issues will be examined along theoretical and ethnographic paths divided into four thematic cycles: 1) introduction to medical anthropology (concepts, paradigms and fundamental texts); 2) social suffering, political violence and health inequalities in the perspective of Global Health; 3) mental health and ethnopsychiatry; 4) the contributions of medical anthropology in understanding demographic transformations and global aging. The first two cycles refer to a common section in which the fundamental topics will be addressed. The third and fourth cycle of lessons are part of an optional section that deals with specific issues within the discipline. At the end of each cycle of the optional section, students will be invited to present to the whole class a working group in which the salient features of topics and lessons will be exposed. The organization of the groups, the distribution of themes and presentation dates will be agreed during the first lesson. The exercise will be part of the final evaluation which will be calculated from the average of the mark obtained by the group (expressed out of thirty) and the mark obtained by the individual student during the exam.

The course of medical anthropology aims to provide in-depth knowledge and critical analysis skills on the main topics of scientific interest in the discipline, according to a historical perspective and integrating into contemporary theoretical and methodological debate. At the end of the course, students are required to have acquired the following skills:

- understanding of the methodological and application aspects of the anthropological approach to the issues of health, disease and treatment;

- critical skills with respect to the different theoretical perspectives that have explored the cultural, sociological and political interactions between bodies and sickness;

- knowledge of the various sectors and application areas of the discipline, both in terms of research and in terms of therapeutic intervention and public policy;

- development of critical skills and autonomous orientation among all the themes and topics addressed, also exploring the possibility of personally formulating new and original research interests.

Frontal lessons; seminar meetings; viewing, analysis and discussion of multimedia and documentary materials; cooperative learning sessions; lecture notes.

During the course, bibliographic references and supplementary teaching materials will be progressively uploaded to the e-learning platform to allow all students to carry out group activities and further investigate any issues of personal interest. In addition, this will allow non-attending students to regularly follow the progress of lessons and to find main concepts and useful materials for the autonomous preparation of the exam.

        Oral exam about the course's topics and the texts in the program. The oral exam consists of four questions : 1) the contents of the first book of your choice (first cycle of lessons), 2) the contents of the second book of your choice (second cycle of lessons), 3) the contents of the third book of your choice (to be chosen among the texts indicated for the third or fourth cycle of lessons), 4) finally, a general question about the lessons and / or slides of the course will serve to attest the ability to create connections and critically analyze the topics explored in class. The final evaluation will also include the grade obtained by the group during the presentation in the classroom. The final grade will be obtained from the average between the working-group grade (expressed out of thirty) and the grade obtained by the individual student during the exam. For non-attending students, group work must be replaced by a critical and independent reading of two articles from those proposed in the bibliography. The main contents and salient points of the text in question will be discussed during the examination, paying particular attention to personal reflections.
