The many facets of uncertainty  in computer science

The course is aimed to study uncertainty in computer science, in particular in knowledge representation and machine learning. We will see that there exists several forms of uncertainty and different tools to manage them. We will discuss the need not to hide uncertainty but to communicate it in a proper way.

- Knowledge representation
  • Taxonomies of flaws in information
  • Different tools for different problems: probability theory, possibility theory, belief functions, fuzzy sets, rough sets.
  • Measuring uncertainty

- Machine Learning

  • Uncertainty in the input, uncertainty in the output
  • Extension of standard machine learning algorithms to cope with uncertainties
  • The Ground-Truth Problem: is the ground-truth certain?
