Course Syllabus
Aims
- Ability to thoroughly acquire an obstetric-gynecological history and perform an objective examination to discriminate between physiological and pathological conditions that can affect women during their life, specifically during the childbearing age, pregnancy, and puerperium.
- Provide initial counseling and treatment for uncomplicated pathological conditions.
- Identify pathological conditions that require specialized referral for further assessment or treatment.
- Acquire knowledge regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches most commonly used in frequent obstetric conditions.
- Provide initial prenatal counseling to promote pregnancy’s health.
Contents
The course will provide the students with basic concepts about the physiology of pregnancy and puerperium and of fetal development.
In addition, the students will gain knowledge regarding the most common pathological conditions that can affect a pregnant or postpartum woman or its fetus.
Also, the course will address the most relevant approaches to promote pregnancy’s health, including prenatal counseling, physical exercise, diet, and vaccination.
Detailed program
- Pre-conceptional counseling (folic acid, diet, physical exercise, hygiene measures, and perinatal infections)
- Conception; multiples
- Embryology and organogenesis
- Normal initial pregnancy evolution and diagnosis; abnormal initial pregnancy evolution: extrauterine pregnancy, miscarriage
- Prenatal diagnosis: invasive and non-invasive techniques; notions regarding local legislation and modalities for pregnancy termination
- Notions of pharmacology in pregnancy
- Antenatal care: definition of the risk path and related follow-up; antenatal testing
- Obstetric diseases: hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, endocrinological disorders
- Maternal and perinatal morbidity (near miss) and mortality
- Fetal growth: normality and deviations (fetal growth restriction, macrosomia, Doppler findings)
- Placental abnormalities: anatomy, location, adhesion and detachment; imaging in placental adhesion abnormalities (ultrasound and MRI)
- Amniotic fluid abnormalities
- Labor and birth: onset of labor, low- and high-risk management (multiples, sentinel events); cesarean section
- Postpartum hemorrhage
- Preterm and post-term pregnancy
- Long-term cardiovascular risk for women with obstetric diseases
Prerequisites
Fundamentals of the physiology and pathology of the female genital tract and the reproductive cycle.
