Public speaking and effective communication

Objectives
Main goal of this course is to provide students with an introduction to effective communication in public speaking situations and the opportunity to train their oral presentation skills.

After completion of the course, the students will be able to
• understand communication as a multimodal act which integrates verbal and nonverbal systems (vocal nonverbal, facial expressions, eye-gaze, gestures, posture, proxemics, haptics);
• gain awareness of their own communication style;
• develop their public speaking skills, by leveraging assets/strengths and addressing weaknesses/areas of improvement;
• understand how to manage stress during oral presentations.

Methodology
• Students’ short presentations (with videorecording)
• Reflective discussion
• Work in pairs and small groups
• Frontal lecture

Target audience
PhD students from all the phd courses offered in Bicocca.
