Learning objectives

This short module will be closely interlinked with “Microeconomics of Development”. Although the Seminars can be followed as a stand-alone module, students are highly recommended to follow also "Microeconomics of Development”. The lectures indeed will provide opportunities to discuss some papers and put into practice (through actual data analysis performed in Stata) concepts and examples taken from Development Economics, and discussed more in depth in "Microeconomics of Development”.

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Confidently interpret and discuss papers in the field of Development Economics
  • Confidently describe and analyze micro-level data using Stata software

Contents

In the first seminars we will discuss together how to read an academic paper. We will then study and discuss together how to design a Randomized Controlled Trial in Economics. Finally, from the third session onwards, we will then analyze actual data from published studies and discuss the analysis together.

Detailed program

During the seminars we will zoom into some specific studies linked to the topics or methodologies that are relevant for Economics studies. The Seminars are meant to be interactive and students will be asked to read some material and attempt to solve some exercises in advance of each tutorial. Active class participation is strongly encouraged as the seminars build on open discussion of the papers and exercises.

Prerequisites

Students are highly encouraged to attend the module “Microeconomics of Development”. Basic knowledge of Stata software is recommended.

Teaching methods

The module will be delivered live in the classroom (first two sessions) or in the lab (last three sessions).

Assessment methods

Assessment will be based on a take-home assignment. Students will be asked to read, discuss, and analyze data based on a published paper.

Textbooks and Reading Materials

Lecture notes and scientific papers discussed in class.
