Course Syllabus
Aims
To provide the practical concepts necessary for understanding pathologies, indications and procedures of the cardiac surgery field.
Contents
The clerkship in Cardiac Surgery will cover the most important aspects related to surgical treatment of ischemic, valvular and congenital heart diseases. Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to recognize and observe the main cardiac pathologies suitable of surgery and the most important technical procedures.

- Anatomical concepts related to ischemic, valvular and congenital heart diseases.
- Basic concepts regarding treatment of coronary artery diseases.
- Basic concepts regarding treatment of mitral, aortic and tricuspid diseases.
- Basic concepts regarding treatment of congenital heart diseases.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of fundamentals of biology, genetics, morphology, histology, physiology of the cardiovascular system
Teaching form
The students will be involved in the practical activities of the Cardiac Surgery Unit of the Hospital Papa Giovanni XXIII: outpatients, ward, and operating room.
The activities will be mainly observational, but the student will be able to perform a clinical assessment of the patient under the tutor's supervision, recognising all signs and symptoms of the above-mentioned clinical problems.
The student will observe the patient in each phase of the hospital journey: from admission to diagnoses, surgical procedures, and discharge with a special focus on the clinical patient’s record, laboratory investigations, and discharge letter.
The student will be able to take part in the team meetings which are normally performed weekly and group rotations will be organised within the cardiovascular time sheet.

Fourth year of study; first semester.
Assessment method
The student is expected to demonstrate knowledge of basic principles related to hygiene procedures, use of protective devices, record keeping, basic patient assessment and the principles of confidentiality and privacy in the handling of information. Eligibility will be awarded within the overall attendance provided for clerkship 6, and any problem reported to clerkship supervisor.
