Provenance analysis: how to integrate single grain and bulk techniques

This course is aimed at the integration of advanced techniques in sedimentary petrography in order to: reconstruct source-to-sink systems; characterize deposits related to extreme events; explore unconventional oil and gas reservoirs; complement single heavy mineral analysis (i.e., geochronological data). Detailed contents include: (i) Sampling techniques; (ii) Laboratory procedures; (iii)Data collection (microscope and Raman); (iv) Data evaluation and interpretation; (v) Data visualization and statistics.

Evaluation: YES

The final exam of the course consists in the preparation of a short text, minimum 2 and maximum 6 pages, which reports the critical analysis of a scientific publication, chosen among those proposed by the teachers of the course. In this report it is necessary to highlight the innovations introduced by the authors of the article, the weak points of their research and the developments and future applications of this approach and methodology. The report must be submitted to be accepted by the responsible of the course and to obtain the certificate of attendance.
