Obiettivi

L’unità didattica di Emergency ha l’obiettivo di fornire agli studenti di Medicina una comprensione strutturata della fisiopatologia, della presentazione clinica, dell’approccio diagnostico e dei principi di gestione iniziale delle principali emergenze renali, delle vie urinarie, idro-elettrolitiche ed endocrinologiche.

Particolare enfasi viene posta sul riconoscimento precoce delle condizioni potenzialmente letali, sull’integrazione dei dati clinici e laboratoristici e sull’applicazione di principi basati sull’evidenza nel contesto dell’urgenza, al fine di preparare gli studenti alla gestione di tali condizioni durante le attività cliniche e la formazione post-laurea iniziale.

Al termine di questa unità didattica, lo studente sarà in grado di:

  • Comprendere i meccanismi fisiopatologici alla base dell’insufficienza renale acuta, dell’urosepsi, dei disturbi idro-elettrolitici, delle emergenze endocrinologiche e del trauma renale.
  • Riconoscere la presentazione clinica e i criteri di gravità delle principali emergenze nefrologiche e urologiche.
  • Interpretare i principali dati laboratoristici e strumentali rilevanti per la gestione in urgenza delle patologie renali e delle vie urinarie.
  • Identificare le condizioni tempo-dipendenti che richiedono un intervento urgente e una corretta escalation assistenziale.
  • Descrivere i principi della gestione iniziale delle emergenze, inclusi il trattamento fluidico, la terapia antimicrobica, la correzione delle alterazioni elettrolitiche e la stabilizzazione emodinamica.
  • Integrare le conoscenze nefrologiche ed endocrinologiche in un approccio sistematico alla medicina d’urgenza.
  • Applicare il ragionamento clinico a scenari tipici di emergenza caratterizzati da alterazioni renali e metaboliche.

Contenuti sintetici

Utilizzo dei segni clinici, degli esami di laboratorio e degli strumenti diagnostici per l’identificazione delle condizioni patologiche acute e per orientare la gestione iniziale, secondo un approccio di medicina d’urgenza focalizzato sulle alterazioni tempo-dipendenti.

Aims

The aim of the Emergency teaching unit is to provide medical students with a structured understanding of the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and initial management of the most relevant renal, urinary tract, fluid–electrolyte, and endocrine emergencies.

Particular emphasis is placed on early recognition of life-threatening conditions, integration of clinical and laboratory data, and the application of evidence-based principles in the acute setting, preparing students to manage these conditions during clinical clerkships and early postgraduate training.

At the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to:

  • Understand the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying acute kidney injury, urosepsis, fluid and electrolyte disorders, endocrine emergencies, and renal trauma.
  • Recognize the clinical presentation and severity criteria of major nephrological and urological emergencies.
  • Interpret basic laboratory findings and imaging relevant to the acute management of renal and urinary tract diseases.
  • Identify time-dependent conditions requiring urgent intervention and appropriate escalation of care.
  • Outline the principles of initial management, including fluid therapy, antimicrobial treatment, electrolyte correction, and hemodynamic stabilization.
  • Integrate nephrological and endocrinological knowledge into a systematic emergency medicine approach.
  • Apply clinical reasoning to common emergency scenarios involving renal and metabolic derangements.

Use of clinical signs, laboratory tests, and diagnostic tools to identify acute pathological conditions and guide early management, according to an emergency medicine approach focused on time-dependent abnormalities.
