Course Syllabus
Obiettivi
Il corso approfondirà le patologie addominali di interesse chirurgico. Le lezioni forniranno allo studente le conoscenze necessarie sulla gestione generale del paziente chirurgico, comprese le indicazioni, le controindicazioni e la valutazione preoperatoria. Verranno inoltre esplorate le tecniche chirurgiche con particolare attenzione all'anatomia chirurgica e verranno citati anche i risultati attesi degli interventi insieme alla gestione post-operatoria. Il tirocinio clinico fornirà agli studenti le necessarie competenze di comunicazione con il paziente e i parenti, familiarità con le manovre chirurgiche di base e con i principali interventi chirurgici. L'interazione con infermieri, specializzandi, medici strutturati, così come con gli altri studenti, favorirà la loro competenza relazionale, essenziale per il futuro lavoro di interazione con i colleghi.

Aspetti generali:
gestione del paziente chirurgico e in particolare del paziente critico chirurgico
Urgenze chirurgiche:
-perforazione intestinale, occlusione intestinale, emoperitoneo, appendicite acuta, diverticolite acuta, ischemia intestinale: aspetti clinici diagnostici e gestione in relazione alle classi di priorità;
Chirurgia elettiva:
- patologie oncologiche dell'upper GI e del lower GI, scenari clinici di presentazione, inquadramento diagnostico, terapia multimodale
- patologie infiammatorie croniche intestinali: introduzione agli aspetti chirurgici
- proctologia: ascesso anale, fistola anale, emorroidi, ragade anale
Prerequisiti
Conoscenza dei corsi propedeutici come indicati nel regolamento del corso di laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia
Modalità didattica
L'insegnamento alternerà sessioni pratiche (nei reparti chirurgici, in ambulatorio e in sala operatoria) e attività interattive come segue: Lezioni frontali con presentazione e discussione interattiva.
Sessioni PBL (integrate con lo staff gastroenterologico)

Test a scelta multipla (45 domande)
Esame orale sugli argomenti trattati durante le lezioni, discussione sulla soluzione di problemi clinici e analisi di casi clinici
Tutte le valutazioni saranno svolte in lingua inglese

Aims
The course will explore the abdominal pathologies of surgical interest. The lessons will provide the student the necessary knowledge on the general management of a surgical patient, including the indications, contraindications and preoperative evaluation. Surgical techniques will also explored with a focus on surgical anatomy and we will also cite the expected outcomes of the operations together with the post-operative management. The clinical internship will provide students with the necessary skills of communication with patient and relatives, familiarity with the basic surgical maneuvers and with the main surgical operations. The interaction with nurses, residents, senior doctors, as much as with the other students will foster their relational competence, essential for the future work of interaction with collegues.

Main analysis and understanding of the surgical aspects and management of the GI disorders
Detailed program
Shared with the Surgery course part of Digestive Health and with the Gastroenterology and Hepatology IV course within Clerkship 9)
General aspects:
management of the surgical patient and particularly of the critical surgical patient
Surgical emergencies:
-intestinal perforation, intestinal obstruction, hemoperitoneum, acute appendicitis, acute diverticulitis, intestinal ischemia: diagnostic clinical aspects and management in relation to priority classes.
Elective surgery:
- oncological diseases of the upper GI and lower GI, presenting clinical scenarios, diagnostic framework, multimodal therapy
- chronic inflammatory bowel diseases: introduction to surgical aspects
- proctology: anal abscess, anal fistula, hemorrhoids, anal fissure
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the preparatory courses as indicated in the regulations of the degree course in Medicine and Surgery
Teaching form
The clerckship sessions will alternate practical sessions (in the surgical wards, in the outpatient clinc and in the operatory room) and interactive activities as follows: frontal lessons with interactive presentation and discussion.

The exam will be carried out in an integrated manner according to the modality envised by the overall digestive disease vertical track which is based on:
Multiple Choice Test (45 questions)
Oral exam on the topics covered during the lectures, discussion on clinical problem solving and clinical case analysis
All assessments will be done in English language
