Elettrodinamica classica: fenomenologia, leggi fondamentali e soluzione di problemi

Contenuti sintetici

Sorgenti e struttura della forza elettromagnetica. Fenomenologia, interpretazione e fomalizzazione della descrizione dei fenomeni elettrici e magnetici. Relazioni tra campi e sorgenti in condizioni stazionarie, quasi-stazionarie e variabili in vuoto e nei mezzi materiali (Equazioni di Maxwell in vuoto e nei mezzi). Propagazione ondulatoria dei campi elettromagnetici e campi di radiazione.

Nota: Questa descrizione descrive l'impianto generale. Gli argomenti possono essere trattati in ordine differente nel turno 1 e 2, secondo gusto e giudizio dei docenti.

Elettricità e magnetismo; limite (quasi) stazionario

Carica elettrica e correnti. Invarianza della carica e equazione di continuità. Fenomeni statici, stazionari e quasi-stazionari.

Elettrostatica: Legge di Coulomb e principio di sovrapposizione, energia potenziale di una configurazione di cariche, campo elettrico. Relazione tra campo e sorgerti: flusso del campo elettrico (CE) e legge di Gauss. Il potenziale elettrico, potenziale di una distribuzione di carica, dipoli e multipoli. Forma differenziale delle relaIzioni tra campo e sorgenti, gradiente, divergenza e rotore. Campi notevoli.

Conduttori e isolanti, problema generale dell'elettrostatica, equazioni di Poisson e Laplace: teoremi di unicità e condizioni al contorno, soluzioni particolari dell'equazione di Laplace. Capacità e condensatori, coefficienti di induzione, energia immagazzinata in un condensatore.

Correnti elettriche, definizioni, conservazione della carica ed equazione di continuità. Proprietà dei conduttori: conducibilità e legge di Ohm, dissipazione di energia (legge di Joule), forza elettromotrice, elementi circuitali e reti in corrente continua e variabile con resistenze e condensatori.

Magnetismo (sorgenti stazionarie): Evidenza di fenomeni magnetici, forza di Lorentz e definizione operativa di campo magnetico. Relazioni tra campo magnetico e sorgenti stazionarie (legge di Ampere e flusso di B). Formula di Laplace e potenziale vettore. Campi notevoli.

Campi stazionari e sistemi di riferimento. Invarianza della carica in moto, campo elettrico in diversi SRI, campo (magnetico) di una carica in moto rettilineo uniforme, forza su una carica in moto, interazioni tra cariche in moto. Moti notevoli di una carica un un campi stazionari (e in diversi riferimenti ineraziali).

Leggi di induzione (configurazioni quasi-stazionarie): Induzione magnetica: ossrvazioni di Faraday, esempi, legge universale del flusso, campi variabili e formulazione generale della legge di induzione magnetica (Faraday). Legge di induzione elettrica (Ampere-Maxwell). Equazioni di Maxwell del CEM. Limite quasi-stazionario e applicazioni della legge di induzione magnetica. Mutua e auto-induzione, energia del CM; Applicazioni della legge di Faraday e circuiti in corrente alternata.

Campi nei mezzi materiali (configurazioni statiche o quasi-stazionarie): Campi elettrici, dielettrici, multipoli, campo e potenziale di dipolo, polarizzazione elettrica, teorema di Gauss nei dielettrici, campi notevoli e interfacce, proprietà dei materiali (cenni). Campi magnetici nella materia (approssimazione quasi-stazionaria), Legge di Ampére nei materiali magnetizzati, Suscettività e permittività magnetica, Materiali dia-, para- e ferromagnetici (cenni). Casi notevoli.

Fenomeni elettrici e magnetici con campi variabili

Campi elettromagnetici in vuoto: Equazioni di Maxwell. Soluzioni delle equazioni di Maxwell nel vuoto. Equazione delle onde per E e B in assenza di sorgenti. Onde piane con direzione generica, onde TEM. b) Equazione d'onda in coordinate sferiche e onde sferiche; ampiezza energia e intensità dell'onda. Equazioni di continuità, carica, energia e quantità di moto; energia del campo EM e teorema di Poynting, quantità di moto del campo EM.

Potenziali elettrodinamici: campi quasi-stazionari (ritardati) e di radiazione; metodo generale di soluzione con potenziale vettore e scalare; equazioni per i potenziali; invarianza di gauge; il gauge di Coulomb e di Lorentz; equazioni d'onda per i potenziali; soluzione dell'equazione d'onda per sorgente puntiforme e generalizzazione a sorgente estesa; i potenziali ritardati; distribuzione di carica di dipolo variabile; potenziale e campo; termine quasi-stazionario e termine di radiazione.

Radiazione di carica accelerata; calcolo diretto di E, B e ExB nel limite non-relativistico, potenza irraggiata, relazione di Larmor. Radiazione di sincrotrone e correzione relativistica. Radiazione di sorgenti localizzate oscillanti, termini di multipolo, il dipolo elettrico; potenza emessa da carica osciallante, irraggiamento e smorzamento, antenna lineare (dipolo elettrico), antenna circolare (dipolo magnetico).

Campi elettromagnetici nei mezzi: Equazioni per i campi variabili in mezzi omogenei e continui. Cenni alle interazioni classiche di onde EM con mezzi materiali dielettrici e conduttori.

Corsi di matematica e fisica generale del primo anno del corso di laurea in Fisica

Modalità di verifica del profitto e valutazione

Due prove scritte di due ore con tre problemi in ciascuna prova.

  • 1^ prova: Elettrostatica e campi magnetici stazionari
  • 2^ prova: Elettrostatica nei mezzi materiali e campi variabili (quasi-stazionari)
    Le due prove scritte scritte possono essere sostenute nello stesso appello (2+2 ore) o in due appelli differenti o in prove in itinere (2 ore) durante il corso.
    Prova finale orale con domande sull'intero programma, condizionale al superamento delle prove scritte con un punteggio di almeno 15/30.

Sono valutate la profondità ed estensione della conoscenza degli argomenti del corso, la capacità di utilizzare i concetti per analizzare configurazioni nuove, la chiarezza di esposizione e di uso delle competenze apprese.

QUESTA MODALITÀ È EREDITATA DAL CORSO PRECEDENTE È IN ESAME UNA VARIAZIONE CHE PREVEDE 100 PROBLEMI A CASA E UN ESAME ORALE.

Classical electrodynamics: phenomenology, fundamental laws and problem solving

Contents

Sources and structure of the electromagnetic force. Phenomenology, interpretation, and formalization of electric and magnetic phenomena. Relations between fields and sources under static, quasi-static, and time-varying conditions in vacuum and material media (Maxwell's equations in vacuum and in matter). Wave propagation of electromagnetic fields and radiation fields.

Detailed program

This description describes the general layout. Topics may be covered in different order in Class 1 and 2, according to the taste and judgement of the lecturers.

Electricity and magnetism (quasi-stationary limit)

Sources and structure of the electromagnetic force. Electric charge and currents. Charge invariance and continuity equation. Static, stationary and variable phenomena.

Electrostatics: Coulomb's law and superposition principle, potential energy of a configuration of charges, electric field. Relations between field and sources: electric field flux (EC) and Gauss's law. The electric potential, potential of a charge distribution, dipoles and multipoles. Differential form of field-source relations, gradient, divergence and rotor. Notable fields.

Conductors and insulators, general problem of electrostatics, Poisson's and Laplace's equations: uniqueness theorems and boundary conditions, special solutions of Laplace's equation. Capacitance and capacitors, induction coefficients, energy stored in a capacitor.

Electric currents, definitions, conservation of charge and the continuity equation. Properties of conductors: conductivity and Ohm's law, energy dissipation (Joule's law), electromotive force, circuit elements and direct and variable current networks with resistors and capacitors.

Magnetism (stationary sources): Evidence of magnetic phenomena, Lorentz force and operational definition of magnetic field. Relations between magnetic field and stationary sources (Ampere's law and B flux). Laplace's formula and vector potential. Notable fields.

Stationary fields and reference systems. Invariance of a moving charge, electric field in different SRIs, (magnetic) field of a charge in uniform rectilinear motion, force on a moving charge, interactions between moving charges. Remarkable motions of a charge a stationary fields (and in different inertial references).

Laws of induction (quasi-stationary configurations): Magnetic induction: Faraday's observations, examples, universal law of flux, variable fields and general formulation of the law of magnetic induction (Faraday). Law of electrical induction (Ampere-Maxwell). Maxwell's equations of EMF. Quasi-stationary limit and applications of the law of magnetic induction. Mutual and self-induction, CM energy; Applications of Faraday's law and alternating current circuits.

Fields in matter (static or quasi-stationary configurations): Electric fields in dielectrics, multipoles, dipole field and potential, electric polarisation, Gauss theorem in dielectrics, notable fields and interfaces, material properties (overview). Magnetic fields in matter (quasi-stationary approximation), Ampére's law in magnetised materials, magnetic susceptibility and permittivity, dia-, para- and ferromagnetic materials (outline). Notable cases.

Electrical and magnetic phenomena with variable fields

Electromagnetic fields in vacuum: Maxwell's equations. Solutions of Maxwell's equations in vacuum. Wave equation for E and B in the absence of sources. Plane waves with generic direction, TEM waves. b) Wave equation in spherical coordinates and spherical waves; wave amplitude energy and intensity. Continuity, charge, energy and momentum equations; EM field energy and Poynting theorem, EM field momentum.

Electrodynamic potentials: quasi-stationary (retarded) and radiation fields; general method of solving with vector and scalar potentials; equations for potentials; gauge invariance; Coulomb and Lorentz gauge; wave equations for potentials; solution of wave equation for point source and generalisation to extended source; retarded potentials; variable dipole charge distribution; potential and field; quasi-stationary term and radiation term.

Accelerated charge radiation; direct calculation of E, B and ExB in the non-relativistic limit, radiated power, Larmor relation. Synchrotron radiation and relativistic correction. Radiation from localised oscillating sources, multipole terms, the electric dipole; power emitted by osciallant charge, radiation and damping, linear antenna (electric dipole), circular antenna (magnetic dipole).

Electromagnetic fields in media: Equations for time-varying fields in homogeneous and continuous media. Introduction to classical interactions of EM waves with dielectric and conducting material media.

Semester

1st semester

Assessment method

Two two-hour written tests with three problems in each test.

  • 1st test: Electrostatics and stationary magnetic fields
  • 2nd test: Electrostatics in material media and variable (quasi-stationary) fields
    The two written tests can be taken in the same roll call (2+2 hours) or in two different roll calls or in itinere tests (2 hours) during the course.
    Final oral examination with questions on the entire programme, conditional on passing the written tests with a mark of at least 15/30.

The depth and extent of knowledge of course topics, the ability to use concepts to analyze novel configurations, and the clarity of exposition and use of skills learned are evaluated.
