Obiettivi

Il corso introduce e discute criticamente le proprietà dei solidi inorganici e alcuni metodi avanzati per la sintesi di materiali funzionali.
Questo insegnamento ambisce a contribuire alle competenze specifiche, teoriche e sperimentali, sulle proprietà dei materiali inorganici, e alle capacità pratiche per la preparazione e caratterizzazione dei materiali. Al termine del corso lo studente conoscerà i fondamenti chimico-fisici e di processo relativi ad alcuni tra i principali approcci alla sintesi di materiali inorganici, sia in termini di metodi di sintesi chimica sia di parametri chimico-fisici e di processo per la sintesi di materiali funzionali a base inorganica. Il corso è la naturale integrazione di Chimica Inorganica delle Formulazioni e Chimica di Coordinazione e Metallorganica.

Conoscenze e capacità di comprensione: il corso ha l'obiettivo di creare uno spirito critico, volto all'esame e alla comprensione dei processi coinvolti nella preparazione dei materiali inorganici e delle loro propietà. Lo studente utilizza con dimestichezza concetti e strumenti interpretativi di applicazione generale nell'ambito degli argomenti trattati nelle lezioni.
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate: Al termine del corso lo studente maneggia concetti relativi alle nozioni di termodinamica e cinetica da applicare nel campo della sintesi di materiali inorganici di diverse tipologie, inclusa la rilevanza applicativa dei solidi inorganici in processi industriali e nell'ambito della ricerca.
Autonomia di giudizio: grazie alle interazioni con gli studenti in aula viene costantemente stimolato lo sviluppo di un'adeguata autonomia di giudizio.
Abilità comunicative: il corso ha l'obiettivo di migliorare le abilità comunicative. A tale scopo gli esami di profitto sono svolti con modalità orale in presenza dei docente, con particolare cura verso gli aspetti di linguaggio tecnico e scientifico.
Capacità di apprendimento: il corso vuole stimolare e migliorare le capacità di apprendimento mediante la discussione, in aula, di recenti pubblicazioni scientifiche inerenti agli argomenti del corso. Lo studente avrà modo di sviluppare le proprie capacità di apprendimento autonomo, confrontandosi direttamente anche con le fonti di letterature scientifica, e le proprie abilità comunicative, che verranno verificate in sede di esame orale.

Contenuti sintetici

Teoria del legame chimico nei solidi: metalli, isolanti e semiconduttori. Definizioni avanzate di acidi e basi, reattività di sali fusi, reattività delle superfici dei materiali inorganici.
Distribuzione degli elementi chimici nella crosta terrestre e problema della loro estrazione. Sintesi di materiali funzionali (in forma di cristalli singoli, polveri policristalline, film, materiali con porosità ordinata) mediante: sintesi da fase gassosa, fuso e da soluzione a bassa e alta temperatura, a bassa e alta pressione.

Programma esteso

Teoria del legame chimico nei solidi Modello a bande, elettroni quasi liberi e modello tight-binding, modello di Hubbard.
Disponilità e distribuzione degli elementi chimici nella crosta terrestre: problemi ambientali e tecnologici per l'estrazione degli elementi di interesse per la sintesi di materiali inorganici.

Sintesi di solidi da fase gassosa: deposizione chimica e fisica da vapore, (e tecniche derivate) con modelli cinetici, tipi di reattore, requisiti dei reagenti.

Sintesi da fuso e da soluzione: crescita di cristalli dal fuso: caratteristiche generali e tecniche specifichei (metodi di Verneuil, Bridgman-Stockbarger, Czochralski, Kyroupolos, a zona fluttuante). Crescita da soluzione a bassa e alta temperatura (processi solvotermali e idrotermali, crescita da solventi speciali ad alta temperatura). Reazioni di precipitazione e controllo della morfologia cristallina. Il ruolo di additivi/impurezze.

Reattività e stabilità dei materiali inorganici: Definizioni avanzate di acidi e basi, proprietà acido-base e redox dei materiali inorganici, diagrammi di fase e stabilità in acqua e altri solventi.

Chimica delle superfici dei materiali inorganici: Differenze nella reattività delle diverse facce dei materiali inorganici, effetti di nanostrutturazione, funzionalizzazione di superfici, fenomeni di intercalazione in materiali a strati.

Prerequisiti

Il corso di Chimica dei Materiali Inorganici richiede un approccio interdisciplinare che utilizza nozioni acquisite negli insegnamenti di chimica generale e inorganica, chimica organica, chimica fisica (termodinamica ed equilibrio chimico), fisica generale e nozioni di base di cristallografia.

Modalità didattica

Il corso prevede 24 lezioni frontali da 2 ore in presenza (Didattica Erogativa). Le lezioni verranno impartite in lingua inglese, mediante la proiezione di testo, schemi, diagrammi, fotografie e filmati.

L’esame consiste in un colloquio orale e individuale. Non sono previste prove in itinere intermedie. La votazione viene espressa secondo la seguente scala di valutazione:

Voti alti (28-30 e lode):
Conoscenze e capacità di comprensione: Lo studente ha acquisito ottime e approfondite conoscenze e mostra ottima capacità di ragionamento autonomo sugli argomenti trattati
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate: Lo studente sa affrontare, con completo successo, un caso reale di studio, utilizzando gli strumenti concettuali acquisiti
Capacità espositive e di apprendimento Lo studente formula le risposte fluentemente e con proprietà di linguaggio, ricorrendo anche a rappresentazioni grafiche e simboliche. Si riscostrano al più piccoli errori formali.

Voti medi (23-27):
Conoscenze e capacità di comprensione: Lo studente ha acquisito buone conoscenze e mostra buona capacità di ragionamento autonomo sugli argomenti trattati
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate: Lo studente sa affrontare, con parziale successo, un caso reale di studio, utilizzando gli strumenti concettuali acquisiti
Capacità espositive e di apprendimento Lo studente formula le risposte correttamente e con parziale proprietà di linguaggio, ricorrendo anche a rappresentazioni grafiche e simboliche. Si riscostrano alcuni errori espositivi sostanziali.

Voti bassi (18-22):
Conoscenze e capacità di comprensione: Lo studente ha acquisito sufficienti conoscenze e mostra discreta capacità di ragionamento autonomo sugli argomenti trattati
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate: Lo studente sa affrontare, con autonomia limitata, un caso reale di studio, utilizzando gli strumenti concettuali acquisiti
Capacità espositive e di apprendimento Lo studente formula le risposte con fatica, ricorrendo, se aiutato, anche a rappresentazioni grafiche e simboliche. Si riscostrano vari errori espositivi sostanziali.

Aims

This course describes and discusses the properties of inorganic solids and some advanced methods for the synthesis of functional inorganic materials.
This course aims at contributing to the specific theoretical and experimental knowledge on the properties of inorganic materials, as well as their application to their synthesis and characterization. Students will acquire basic knowledge about relevant advanced inorganic materials and synthetic methods with process parameters. This will enable the student to select approach, method and parameters best suited to fully control and optimize the synthesis of inorganic functional materials. This course logically completes the teachings of Chimica Inorganica delle Formulazioni and Chimica di Coordinazione e Metallorganica.

Knowledge and understanding: The course aims to develop a critical mindset focused on examining and understanding the typical processes for preparation of inorganic materials. Students will be enabled to confidently use concepts and interpretative tools for the topics discussed during the lectures.
Applying knowledge and understanding: By the end of the course, students will be proficient in concepts related to thermodynamics and kinetics applied to synthesis of varied types of inorganic materials, including exploitation of inorganic solids in industrial and research processes.
Making judgements: Through frequent interactions with students in class, the course will encourage the development of independent judgment.
Communication skills: the course aims to improve the communication skills. To this end, exams are performed with oral interaction between student and the instructors. Students are encouraged to focus on communication aspects during their learning process, with particular emphasis on technical and scientific language.
Learning skills: the course seeks to improve the learning abilities through the discussion of recent scientific publications related to its topics. The student will develop her/his learning skills by exploiting also the scientific literature, together with the communication skills, which will be evaluated during the exam.

Contents

Theory of chemical bonding in solids: metals, insulators, semiconductors. Advanced definitions of acids and bases, reactivity of molten salts, surface properties of inorganic materials. Distribution of chemical elements within the Earth's crust and their extraction. Advanced synthesis of functional materials (single crystals, polycrystalline powders, films, and ordered porous materials): synthesis of solids from the gas phase, from melts and solutions at low and high temperature, low and high pressure, exploitation of sol-gel processes.

Detailed program

Theory of chemical bonding in solids Band model, nearly-free electrons ad tight binding model, Hubbard model.

Availability and distribution of chemical elements within the Earth's crust: environmental and technological issues for extraction of elements involved in synthesis of inorganic materials.

Synthesis of solids from the gas phase: Chemical and Physical Vapor Deposition (with sister techniques such as sputtering, thermal evaporation, vapor phase epitaxy, Chemical Vapor Infiltration, ..) with kinetic models, reactor types, features od reactants

Synthesis of solids from melts and solutions: crystal growth from the melt: general features and special techniques (Verneuil, Bridgman-Stockbarger, Czochralski, Kyroupolos, Skull method, Floating zone). Growth from low and high temperature solutions (solvothermal and hydrothermal processes, flux growth). Precipitation reactions and control of crystal morphology. The role of additives/impurities.

Reactivity and stability of inorganic materials:: Advanced definitions of acids and bases, acid/base properties of inorganic material, redox properties of inorganic materials, phase diagrams and stability in water and other solvents

Surface Chemistry of inorganic materials: Differences in reactivity of various facets of inorganic materials. Effects of nanostructuring. Surface functionalization. Intercalation phenomena in layered materials-

Prerequisites

Chemistry of inorganic materials is based on an interdisciplinary approach exploiting general and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry (thermodynamics and chemical equilibria), general physics, and basic knowledge of crystallography.

Teaching form

The course provides 24 two-hour lectures, in person (Delivered Didactics). Lectures will be given in English supported by video projection of text, schemes, diagrams, pictures and movies.

Assessment method

The examination is performed through an oral exam without midterm tests. The grade is attributed according to the following criteria:
High grades (28-30 cum laude):
Knowledge and understanding: The student acquired excellent and deep knowledge, and shows excellent capability of autonomous reasoning on the covered topics.
Applied knowledge and understanding: The student is able to analyze with full success a real case study, using the acquired conceptual tools.
Communication and learning skills The student can fluently and appropriately answer to the questions, recurring also to graphic and symbolic representations. Only small formal errors are reported.

Intermediate grades (23-27):
Knowledge and understanding: The student acquired good knowledge, and shows good capability of autonomous reasoning on the covered topics.
Applied knowledge and understanding: The student is able to analyze with partial success a real case study, using the acquired conceptual tools.
Communication and learning skills The student can partially answer to the questions, recurring also to graphic and symbolic representations. Few substantial errors are also reported.

Low grades (18-22):
Knowledge and understanding: The student acquired fair knowledge, and shows fair capability of autonomous reasoning on the covered topics.
Applied knowledge and understanding: The student is able, if assisted, to analyze a real case study, using the acquired conceptual tools.
Communication and learning skills The student can fairly answer to the questions, recurring also to graphic and symbolic representations if assisted. Several substantial errors are reported.

Insufficient grade (lower than 18):
Knowledge and understanding: The student did not acquire sufficient knowledge, and does not show sufficient capability of autonomous reasoning on the covered topics.
Applied knowledge and understanding: The student is not able to analyze a real case study, using the acquired conceptual tools.
Communication and learning skills The student cannot formulate appropriate answers.
