Course summary SYLLABUS
Objective:
The gastroenterology internship aims to provide exposure in diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders. Interns will gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as advanced diagnostic tools such as endoscopy and imaging techniques.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the internship, interns will assist:
Diagnosis if common and complex gastrointestinal diseases.
Interpretation of diagnostic tests and imaging studies in gastroenterology.
Endoscopic procedures and understand their indications.
Development of treatment plans for patients with gastrointestinal conditions.
Communication effectively with patients and healthcare teams regarding treatment options and procedures.

Aims

The purpose of the internship is to provide the student with a solid foundation in the clinical and laboratory management of the principal gastroenterological and hepatological diseases, with a particular focus on patients with advanced liver disease and recipients of liver transplantation.

Contents

1.    Clinical approach of patients presenting with advanced liver disease in the inpatient and outpatient setting

2.    Clinical approach of patients presenting with chronic biliary conditions in the inpatient and outpatient setting

3.    Clinical approach of patients with inflammatory bowel disease in the inpatient and outpatient setting

4.     Clinical approach to the liver transplant recipient

5.    Interventional hepatology (paracentesis, thoracentesis, TIPPS placement, RFA, TACE)

6.     Laboratory diagnosis of autoimmune liver diseases

7.    Gastrointestinal endoscopy

MOTOR DISORDER OF THE ESOPHAGUS AND GASTROESOPHAGEAL DISEASE - Achalasia; other hypermotility disorders of the distal esophagus and lower esophagus sphincter; esophageal hypomotility disorders. - Gastroesophageal reflux disease and its complications - Barret’s esophagus - Esophageal disorders caused by infection, sysyemic diseases, radiation, trauma and medications - Dyspeptic disease ACID-RELATED DISEASES - Gastritis and gastropathies - Peptic ulcer and complication - Helicobacter Pylori infection - Zollinger- Ellison’s syndrome ABDOMINAL PAIN, CONSTIPATION AND DIARREA - Cholelitiasis - Chronic constipation - Acute and chronic diarrhea – Irritable bowel syndrome MALABSORPTION - Maldigestion and malabsorption - Celiac disease UPPER AND LOWER GASTROINTESTINAL BLEEDING - Haematemesis and melena - Haematochezia and lower GI bleeding - Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES - Ulcerative colitis - Crohn’s disease - Indeterminate colitis and microscopic colitis - Diverticular disease ACUTE AND CHRONIC HEPATITIS – viral hepatitis, chronic non-viral hepatitis. Wilson’s disease and hemochromatosis - Alcoholic liver disease – Cholestatic liver disease - Metabolic liver disease and steatosis - Drug-induced liver injury CIRRHOSIS AND PORTAL HYPERTENSION - Cirrhosis compensated and decompensated - Portal hypertension - Complication of cirrhosis: ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, hepato-renale syndrome, gastroesophageal varices, hepatic encephalopathy - Liver transplantation TUMOR OF THE LIVER - Primary and secondary tumours of the liver - Focal nodular hyperplasia - Benign liver lesions - Malignant liver lesions: hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcninoma, epatoblastoma, emangioendotelioma ACUTE AND CHRONIC PANCREATITIS - Acute and chronic biliary pancreatitis - Others (alcholic, genetic etc.) – Complications.
