Aims

The course aims to provide the essential knowledge on the clinical diagnosis and management of various pleural and pulmonary diseases, including interstitial lung diseases and tumors. After the completion of this course, the student will understand the main principles of primary prevention and palliation of chronic respiratory diseases, according to current practice guidelines.

Contents

  • Pleural diseases, imaging and procedures; interstitial lung disorders; pleural and lung tumors; smoking-related pulmonary disease; palliation in chronic pulmonary diseases; guidelines of the main pulmonary diseases.

Detailed program

· pleural diseases, including pneumothorax, pleural effusion and pleural infections

· basic knowledge on pleural imaging and procedures

· interstitial lung disorders, including sarcoidosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

· epidemiology, diagnosis and staging of pleural and lung tumors

· principles of smoking cessation and smoking-related pulmonary disease

· principles of palliation in chronic pulmonary diseases

· evidence-based medicine diagnostic guidelines of the main pulmonary diseases.

Prerequisites

  • Basic physiology, pathology and pathophysiology of respiratory system

  • Basic image diagnostics

  • English language

Teaching form

Live sessions.

During COVID-19 emergency period, the lectures and clinical case/problem discussions will be held remotely by synchronous online videoconference or recorded video lectures available on demand.

All course activities will be held in English language

Assessment method

- Written exam with multiple choice quiz comprising 30 questions with only one correct answer (among 5) aimed at evaluating global comprehension of course program. Each correct answer is scored 1. A minimum score of 18 is required for being admitted to oral examination
- Oral examination (discussion on topics covered during the lectures or clinical case analysis)

*During the COVID-19 emergency only telematic oral exams will be available. They will be carried out using the WebEx platform. For access to the events, the links will be published in the e-learning page of the subject
All assessments will be done in English language.
