Aims
The student will attend the wards and outpatient departments of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery to acquire the first clinical skills in the management of this patients.
Contents
Respiratory Medicine
The clerkship will cover the most important aspects related to the commonly Respiratory diseases. Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to take history and recognize acute and chronic respiratory failure and
obstructive and restrictive diseases signs and symptoms. Students will take part to both outpatient and inpatient clinical activity, including attendance in pulmonary function tests laboratory. Alongside the medical staff they will
improve skills in carrying out the physical examination and in the indications for the prescription and interpretation of arterial blood gas analysis and chest radiological imaging.
Cardiovascular Medicine
The clerkships will cover the most important aspects related to the commonly encountered pathologies of the cardiovascular system. Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to recognize myocardial ischemia symptoms, heart failure signs/symptoms, patient with cardiac arrhythmias, valvular heart disease, and congenital heart disease.
Cardiac Surgery
The clerkship will cover the most important aspects related to surgical treatment of ischemic, valvular and congenital heart diseases.
Students will acquire the basic knowledge required to recognize the main cardiac pathologies suitable of surgery and the most important technical procedures.
Detailed program
Respiratory Medicine
- Take a history, perform a physical examination on patients with pulmonary diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia and respiratory failure and basic concepet of their clinical management
- Take a history, perform a physical examination on patients with pleural diseases such as pleurisy and pneumothorax and basic concepet of their clinical management
- Take a history, perform a physical examination on patients with pleuropulmonary cancer and indication to diagnostic procedure such as Thoracentesis, Trans thoracic biopsy and Bronchoscopy
- Know the main bronchopulmonary diseases secondary to exposure to smoke
- Indication and basic concepts of intepretation of pulmonary function tests including spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide and exhaled nitric oxide detection
- Chest plain radiograph, CT-scan and US in pulmonary diseases: indication and relevant findings
- Basic concept about prescription of oxygen therapy and non invasive ventilation
- Use of personal protective equipment in the patient with respiratory infection
Cardiovascular Medicine
- Clinical approach and management of the patient presenting with myocardial ischemia symptoms
- Clinical approach and management of the patient presenting with heart failure signs/symptoms
- Clinical approach and management of the patient presenting with cardiac arrhythmias
- Clinical approach and management of the patient with valvular heart disease
- Clinical approach and management of the patient with congenital heart disease
Cardiac Surgery
- Clinical approach and management of the patients presenting with ischemic, valvular or congenital heart diseases in the cardiac surgery ward.
- Basic concepts regarding surgical treatment of coronary artery diseases.
- Basic concepts regarding surgical treatment of mitral, aortic and tricuspid diseases.
- Basic concepts regarding surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases.
Prerequisites
Basic Clinical Skills course
Basics concepts of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and cardiovascular system
Basic knowledge of fundamentals of biology, genetics, morphology, histology, physiology of the cardiovascular system

Practical guided observation activities with briefings and debriefings by hospital tutors of Respiratory Medicine Unit
Cardiovascular Medicine
Practical guided observation activities with briefings and debriefings by hospital tutors
Interaction with patients will be in the Italian language
Interaction with tutors will be both in the Italian and in the English language
Cardiac Surgery
Practical guided observation activities with briefings and debriefings by hospital tutor
Practical teaching in Cardiac Surgery Ward and in the Operating Room
