Course Syllabus
Aims
The main aim of this integrated course is twofold:
- Explaining the role of legal/forensic medicine in a modern society, with proper application of legislation in all medical health care fields. (Legal medicine)
- Understanding the process of technology assessment in healthcare, being able to read and structure a HTA report. (HTA)
Contents
Forensic pathology, study of death and autopsy, clinical forensic medicine, doctor-patient relationship, welfare system, special legislations in medicine, medical and surgical malpractice, expert opinions for the court, principles, concepts and methods employed in the technology assessment procedures, multidimensional approaches involved in the HTA, measurements of Overall Strength of Evidence.
Detailed program
1.Discipline and methodology in legal/forensic medicine
2.Forensic pathology, forensic anthropology, thanatology and forensic autopsy, clinical forensic medicine.
3.Doctor-patient relationship, welfare system in a modern society, special legislations in medicine, medical malpractice, expert opinions in court.
4. Introduction of new technologies: approval and reimbursement processes.
5. Multidisciplinary perspective of HTA and role of National and international HTA agencies.
6. HTA report structure: review of clinical efficacy measures, Review of Economic impact index and complex assessment using Markov model.
7. Systematic reviews in HTA. How to synthesize results: forest and funnel plot.
Prerequisites
There are no mandatory courses however students will benefit from having undertaken “biostatistics”, “health economics” and “Turning Clinical Experience Into Research Projects”.
Teaching form
Lectures held in-person in delivering type in English language: 40 lectures of 3-4 hours each.
In case of emergency situations online teaching-classroom with synchronous lectures on the Webex
platform.

Assessment method
There are no ongoing tests.
Legal medicine:
Final exam in presence consisting in two mandatory parts written and oral:
a) written part with individual preparation at home of a report on a medical-legal topic chosen by
the student with a case
b) oral part with 2 questions of the program topics to assess the student’s knowledge of the module
program.
HTA:
The exam will require each student to prepare a case study report. This report will be presented during the exam and will serve as the foundation for the subsequent oral examination. Additional instructions will be provided throughout the course.
