  • The international Master’s degree in Marine Sciences is offered jointly by the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy and The Maldives National University. The course provides with the skills to conceive solutions and develop strategies to solve marine and coastal areas problematic issues. In particular, the student will be prepared to study and analyse: a) natural processes and related risks, with reference to the marine ecosystem (chemical, biological, ecological, earth sciences fields); b) human interactions with the marine system (socio-economic and legal fields), for a policy of sustainable management and protection from anthropogenic risks in oceanic and coastal environments.

    The access to the course is based on the following admission criteria:

    - Bachelor’s Degree at MNQF level 7 OR level 8 in marine sciences or a related field (The Maldives national qualifications framework).

    - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Geology or related fields (International). Graduates with a high level of competence, but whose background is not entirely consistent with the requirements, may be admitted to an assessment test, to be held online. The selection committee will evaluate the education of the candidates in considering their admission to the program.

    Language requirements: applicants must have a knowledge of English language at B2 level (or higher) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

    Lessons will be taught in English. After completion of the first common teachings, students can choose among three different tracks: ENVIRONMENT, BIO-ECOLOGY and HUMAN GEOGRAPHY. During the course, non-Italian students will be required to pass an Italian level B1, administered by the University of Milano-Bicocca (free).

    Faculty will give face to face or video lectures; regardless of whether students attend class on-campus or remotely, a technology platform will allow them to follow and download lessons, read Syllabi, submit questions, take part in didactic chat rooms.

    Each student will have access to library services, including lending of books, databases for scientific consultation, articles downloading, and much more.

    The Master’s degree in Marine Sciences entitles to apply for admission in second level Masters or PhD schools.

    Admitted candidates - first semester 2021-2022

    • How to be admitted

      Applicants to the Master’s Degree in Marine Sciences - Scienze Marine must possess a first-level, three-year (Bachelor’s) university degree or diploma, or a recognized qualification from a non-Italian institution.

      More specifically, admission to the Master’s Degree course in Marine Sciences - Scienze Marine providing specialist knowledge and skills is subject to applicants being in possession of at least 18 credits (CFUs) testifying to a basic grounding in the following disciplines:

      -     Chemistry and allied areas (CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06),
      -     Biology and allied areas (BIO/01, BIO/05),
      -     Earth Sciences (GEO/04, GEO/07),
      -     Ecology and allied areas (BIO/03, BIO/07).

      International students will be evaluated on the basis of their academic record in above mentioned subjects.

      Candidate selection will be made on the basis of the applicants’ CV and a computer-based test + interview whose procedures will be established by the Course Board and published on the University website.

      If, at the conclusion of the interview, the candidate is accepted for the course, a training path considered most suitable will be suggested.

      English language skills requirement: applicants must have a knowledge of English language at B2 level (or higher) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The requirement is met when applicants have a B2 level certificate issued by recognized institutions (for a full list list of certificates recognized by our University, please download the pdf file published at OR have obtained a Bachelor’s degree taught in English.


      Assessment of applicants’ suitability to attend the course will be carried out by means of a computer based self-assessment test (multiple choice questionnaire) and an interview to evaluate their basic knowledge of geology, biology, chemistry and geography, all necessary prerequisites to complete the proposed course successfully.

      The test and interview are an opportunity to highlight areas requiring further study, and suggest personalized remedial study plans. Both the computer based test and interview will be conducted in English. 

      Admission: dates and details

      The interview and the computer-based self-assessment test will take place: 


      June 18th  2021 (Only for extra-UE candidates) - Applications: from April 12th to June 11th 2021

      September 15th and 16th 2021 - Applications: from June 12th to September 8th 2021


      February 1st 2022 - Applications: from January 10th to January 24th 2022

      For foreign applicants and residents beyond 150 km distance the computer-based test can be taken online.

      The computer-based self-assessment test will consist of 15 multiple-choice questions (5 for each field) aimed at the self-assessment of the knowledge of basic concepts in the fields of Environment, Bioecology and Human Geography.

      Candidates should consider their education background. If necessary, they can fill their gaps in one or more of the three fields using the following list of recommended readings.

      BioecologyMarine Ecology,Kaiser et al.

      Human Geography:  Human Geography", Bjelland, Montello, Fellman, Getis, only Cap 1 (Introduction) and Cap 13 (Human Impact on the Environment).


        If you wish to enroll at the University of Milano-Bicocca, and specifically at Marine Sciences post-graduate degree, there is a specific procedure to follow which depends on your nationality and qualifications.



        • Extra UE candidates will have to apply from April 12th to June 11th 2021. For such students assessment tests and interview will be held on June 18th 2021.
        • All other students will have to apply from June 12th to September 8th 2021. For such students assessment test and interview will be held on September 15th and 16th 2021.


        • Students will have to apply from January 10th to January 24th 2022. Assessment test and interview will be held on February 1st 2022.


        Extra-EU students requiring a visa must also apply for pre-enrolment at the Italian national university portal Universitaly. Only afterwards, Extra-EU students can fill in the pre-enrolment application at the Online Registry of the University of Milan-Bicocca

        1. copy of the degree required for admission (in Italian or English)
        2. transcript of records (in Italian or English)
        3. translation in Italian or English, if the degree and/or transcript are issued in other languages
        4. Diploma Supplement, Dichiarazione di Valore in loco or CIMEA’s Statement of comparability of foreign qualifications, if already held by the candidate during the on line application
        5. any other documents held by the candidate that are useful to assess the degree (e.g. Syllabus)

        IMPORTANT: European students can replace documents listed at points 1 and 2 with a self-certifcation in Italian or English language.
