General information
The Master’s degree program in Data Science requires 6 CFU to be obtained by means of a curricular internship, in the fields of the subjects covered by the degree program.
It is carried out under the guidance of a company tutor and under the supervision of a university tutor.Data Science internship regulation:
Italian original version
English versionWhen can I start the curricular internship?
Students can start the curricular internship only if they have already achieved at least 54 CFU.Which is the curricular internship duration?
The curricular internship requires a frequency of at least 3 months (at least 150 hours over 3 months).
It is important to pay attention to the deadlines required for the final exam. Are internship and final thesis the same activity?
Internship and thesis can be carried out in parallel, but please remember that they are two different administrative procedures.
The curricular internship corresponds to 6 CFU (at least 3 months) and it has a formative nature. It is conducted under the guidance of a Company Tutor and supervised by a University Tutor.
The final thesis corresponds to 21 CFU (at least 6 months) and it constitutes the conclusion of the student’s educational path. It can be started 1) sending the Thesis Assignment Proposal to segreteria.didattica@disco.unimib.it and then 2) after receiving the approval issued by the Teaching Committee. Once approval is received, the period devoted to the preparation of your thesis will start. What kind of internship can I start and how?
There are different typologies of internship from which the students can choose:1) External internship
It is carried out at one of the external companies/bodies affiliated with the University of Milano-Bicocca for the training activity.
The external internship can be identified by the students on their own, or by consulting the stage offers published on Segreterie Online.
Information about the university affiliation modality and activation of the external internship (for both company/body and student) is provided at the webpage: https://www.unimib.it/servizi/stage-e-tirocini/stage-e-tirocini-curriculari
For further questions please write to: stage@unimib.it
For each external internship a University Tutor and a Company Tutor must be assigned.
The Company Tutor is usually the supervisor of the student at the company, or in any case an expert that works at the company.
The University Tutor is a Data Science professor that will be periodically updated about the progress of the activity by the student and will recognize the credits.
The assignment of the specific University Tutor to each internship is usually carried out by the Data Science Stage Referent (this role is covered by prof. Enrico Moretto enrico.moretto@unimib.it starting from December 1, 2024).
The administrative procedure of activation and closure of the external internship is managed through the Stage portal of Segreterie Online. In order to close the activity on Segreterie Online (with recognition of credits), at the end of the internship students have to upload on their personal page the following attachments (two separate files in pdf):
- report with at least 3 updates with the University Tutor
- final report describing the activity (max. 200 words, there is no template). In addition, a online questionnaire to be filled in will be provided at the end of the internship (for both student and Company tutor).
2) Internal internship:
It can be carried out at one of the Departments of the University under the supervision of a Data Science professor.
- the internship can be activated at a Department other than the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication (DISCo);
- the internship can be activated at one of the Laboratories of the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication (DISCo) - please contact the professors in order to verify the availability (https://www.disco.unimib.it/it/ricerca/laboratori-ricerca).
For each internal internship a University Tutor and a Company Tutor must be assigned.
The Company Tutor is usually the supervisor of the student at the laboratory.
The University Tutor is a Data Science professor that will be updated periodically about the progress of the activity by the student and will recognize the credits.Only once the activity has been agreed with the tutors, the Company Tutor or the University Tutor fill in the internship form detailing the project.

3) Erasmus Traineeship:
Information about the opportunity to achieve the internship credits by attending the Erasmus Program is available at the webpage: https://www.unimib.it/internazionalizzazione/erasmus-traineeship
For questions please write to: erasmus.traineeship@unimib.it4) Internship abroad:
If you want to activate an internship at a foreign company/body/agency (not under the Erasmus Traineeship), you can find information about the procedure at the webpage https://www.unimib.it/servizi/stage-e-tirocini/stage-tirocinio-allestero
For questions about the activation please write to: stage@unimib.itAt the end of the internship students have to send to their University Tutor and to segreteria.didattica@disco.unimib.it:
- report with at least 3 updates with the University Tutor
- final report describing the activity (max. 200 words, there is no template).5) Project Work (only for working/employed students):
The students whose job is related to data science fields can obtain the 6 CFU by replacing the internship with a project work at their workplace (at least 3 months).
In order to activate the Project Work, the students have to identify the Company Tutor (he/she is usually their supervisor/manager or an expert of the company) and a University Tutor among the Data Science professors. If the students don’t succeed in finding a University Tutor, they can preliminarily write to the Data Science Stage Referent (this role is covered by prof. Enrico Moretto enrico.moretto@unimib.it starting from December 1, 2024), who will assign a professor for this role.
The student has to fill in the form below detailing the project and the methodology used, and send it by email to the Data Science Stage Referent (prof. Enrico Moretto enrico.moretto@unimib.it) and the Teaching Office segreteria.didattica@disco.unimib.it
Please remember to send the form signed by the student, the Company Tutor and the University Tutor.
The Stage Referent will assess the activity for approval. After the approval the student can start the Project Work.
The student has to update the University Tutor at least three times, and the meetings must be recorded in the form that the student will receive by the Teaching office.Project work dates report - CFU recognition
